Solid, veneer, MDF, particle board — what you're actually buying
Furniture retail uses "wood" loosely. There are four different materials behind the word, and they behave very differently over ten years.
Solid timber is boards sawn from a log, dried, and machined. It's the same material all the way through: a scratch reveals more wood, a damaged edge can be sanded and refinished, and a well-made joint can be re-glued decades later. It's also the most expensive option and the only one that moves with humidity — more on that below.
Veneer is a thin slice of real wood — usually 0.5–1 mm — glued over a cheaper core. Veneer is not a con; it's legitimate where stability matters more than repairability, and most fine mid-century furniture used it. The problem is disclosure: "oak finish" and "oak veneer" are routinely used to imply solid oak. Once veneer wears or chips through, there's no repair — you're looking at the core.
MDF (medium-density fibreboard) is wood fibre and resin pressed into sheets. It's flat, stable, cheap, and takes paint well — legitimate for painted internals and wall panelling. It swells permanently if water gets in, holds screws poorly on re-fixing, and sags under sustained load.
Particle board (chipboard) is coarser wood chips and resin, usually wrapped in a printed melamine "woodgrain" foil. It's what most flat-pack furniture is made from. It's the weakest of the four: joints strip, edges crumble on impact, and moisture failure is common in NZ coastal humidity.
How to tell them apart in a showroom
- Look at end grain. On a solid top, the grain on the face flows over the edge and shows growth rings on the end. Veneer shows a thin band at the edge, or an edge strip whose grain doesn't line up with the face.
- Open a drawer. Undersides, drawer boxes and back panels are where board hides. Solid drawer sides show grain on their top edge; board shows a uniform speckled core.
- Lift one end. Solid hardwood is heavy, but so is MDF — weight alone proves nothing. Weight plus visible end grain does.
- Ask for the spec sheet. A retailer selling genuine solid timber will name the species and the board construction. Vague answers ("hardwood", "oak-style") are answers.
What each does over ten years
Solid timber picks up dents and marks, all of which are sandable; it may develop fine seasonal checks; joints stay serviceable. Veneer looks unchanged until it doesn't — chips and worn patches are effectively permanent. MDF and particle board fail structurally: sagging shelves, stripped cam locks, swollen edges. The honest summary: solid wood ages, board expires.
Species, compared
Hardness is the Janka rating (force to embed a steel ball halfway — a fair proxy for dent resistance). Movement is how much the timber shifts with humidity. Cost tiers are relative within hardwoods.

A note on "oak": American white oak, European oak and Victorian ash (a eucalypt, not an oak) are all sold as "oak" in this market. They are different timbers with different hardness and movement. Ask which one.

Kiln drying and moisture content — why it matters here
Wood is hygroscopic: it takes on and gives up moisture until it matches the air around it, and it changes size as it does. Furniture timber must be kiln dried to roughly 8–12% moisture content before machining. Skip or rush this and the piece will crack, twist or open its joints in its first year — usually in its first summer.
This matters more in New Zealand and Australia than in most markets. An Auckland or Brisbane summer can sit above 70% relative humidity; a Central Otago or Canberra winter with a heat pump running can drop indoor humidity below 40%. That swing moves an 1,800 mm solid oak table top by several millimetres across its width, every year, forever. Good construction expects this; bad construction fights it and loses.
What to ask: the moisture content the timber was dried to, and whether it was acclimatised for this market. Furniture kiln-dried for a European indoor climate and shipped straight into an NZ coastal summer is a known failure mode.
Movement, cupping, and honest expectations
Solid wood moves across the grain, barely at all along it. Design has to allow for that: table tops fixed with slotted buttons rather than screwed rigid, panels floating in frames, breadboard ends pinned at the centre only. This is why solid furniture is a design discipline and not just a material choice.
The trade-offs, stated plainly: a solid top can cup if one face is sealed and the other isn't, or if it sits over a heat source. Hairline seasonal checks at board ends are normal, not defects. Solid wood dents where board would not (board fails outright instead, later). If you want a surface that never changes, solid timber is the wrong material — laminate is the right one. We'd rather lose that sale than argue with physics.
Board construction: how a solid panel is actually made
Almost no table top is one plank. There are three ways to make a wide solid panel, and all three are honestly "solid wood" — but they look and behave differently.
- Full-stave (edge-glued boards): long boards glued edge to edge. Continuous grain lines, the premium look, needs the most careful timber selection and drying.
- Finger-jointed panel: short lengths joined end-to-end, then edge-glued. Very stable, uses timber efficiently, but the zig-zag end joints are visible. Fine inside a drawer; a compromise on a show surface.
- Laminated / butcher-block: narrow strips glued face or edge. Extremely stable, busy appearance.
Oaknest's position: show surfaces — tops, fronts, visible panels — in full-stave construction; finger-jointed panels acceptable in concealed structure where their stability is an advantage; and the construction of every panel stated on each product's specification sheet, so you never have to guess.
The checklist: what to ask any retailer
Print this, take it shopping, and ask it of everyone — including us at launch. Every question has a short factual answer; hedging is a result.
- Which species, exactly — and is "oak" American white oak, European oak, or Victorian ash?
- Is every component solid — including drawer boxes, back panels and shelf bottoms? Which parts aren't?
- What moisture content was the timber dried to, and was it acclimatised for NZ/AU?
- How is the top attached — does the design allow for seasonal movement?
- What is the panel construction: full-stave, finger-jointed, or laminated?
- What joinery holds it together — named joints, or cam locks and dowels?
- What is the finish, and can it be spot-repaired at home?
- What does the warranty cover, in writing, and for how long?
